NZARE sessions at AERA, CSSE and BERA 2009
NZARE has arrangements with the American Educational Research Association (AERA), the Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE), and the British Educational Research Association (BERA) in which these organizations allocate a session at their annual conference each year for presentations supported by NZARE.
The 2009 dates and locations of these conferences are as follows:
- AERA 13-17 April 2009, San Diego (California)
- CSSE date tbc but likely to be late May–early June 2009, Carleton University (Ottawa)
- BERA 2-5 September 2009, Manchester University
The main purpose of these sessions is to showcase examples of the best of recent New Zealand research. The sessions also allow the presenters to establish and build international linkages to support their ongoing research programmes.
NZARE provides financial assistance of up to $3,000 to each team of presenters.
Current NZARE members are invited to submit proposals for a symposium, or, in the case of CSSE, a paper (or two linked papers), on a completed research project (or linked projects) that was carried out in New Zealand, and that is likely to be of interest to an international audience.
The closing date for submissions of full proposals (see below) for the 2009 conferences is: 31st August 2008. Proposals should be sent to the NZARE Council member with responsibility for international links, currently:

The selection process will be complete (and the applicants notified) by mid-October 2008. Ideally the selected symposia/paper(s) should be presented at the 2008 NZARE conference in Palmerston North (as this gives the presenters an opportunity to receive feedback before presenting at the international conferences). Please note, however, that the process of selecting symposia to represent NZARE at these international conferences is now entirely separate from the NZARE Conference process. Please note also that the process is different in two other ways from that followed in recent years:
- Proposers are required to submit a 2000 word extended abstract setting out the proposed content of their symposium/paper(s). This should include: the objectives of the project and/or its research questions; the methodologies used; a summary of the research findings and/or the main argument(s) to be presented; an overview of the contributions of each of the presenters; and a rationale for the symposium as a whole -which shows clearly how and why the contributions are linked.
- Proposers of symposia are required to provide a chair and one or more discussants (who are not presenters). A key purpose of these symposia is to establish and extend the international connections of the presenters and their research activities. Thus the chair and discussants should be people who have an international reputation in the particular field of research that is to be discussed. The NZARE Council reserves the right to suggest and/or modify the chairs and/or discussants of symposia that are selected to represent NZARE at these conferences (should this be necessary and/or helpful).
Proposals should contain the following information:
- The conference for which you are applying (AERA, BERA or CSSE);
- The title of the symposium; the titles of the individual papers (in order of presentation); and the names of the authors of each paper;
- An abstract for the symposium as a whole; abstracts for each of the papers; and a rationale for the symposium as a whole (see above);
- Contact details for the symposium coordinator and individual team members (including institutional addresses, email addresses, phone and fax numbers).
A subcommittee of the NZARE Council, led by the Council member responsible for international links, is responsible for selecting symposia, or, in the case of CSSE, paper(s), to represent NZARE at these international conferences. The Council may invite confidential referees from outside the Council to provide expertise in particular areas of education research, if this is necessary. The decisions of this subcommittee are ratified by the Council, with whom the final decision rests. The Council reserves the right to make no selection for any or all of the overseas conferences in any given year.
NZARE aims to promote robust, well-informed research debate in the area of education, in New Zealand and international contexts. Thus the views expressed by symposium presenters may differ from those of NZARE as a research organization, or those of its Council: however, NZARE expects presenters to uphold the principles and spirit of academic freedom, and the NZARE code of ethics.
